If your bathroom counter is anything like mine, it is covered in beautiful lotions and potions. (Insert excited shriek and a glare from my better-half because let's face it, he barely has room for his toothbrush on 'our' bathroom counter).
Who doesn't love the luxurious feel of serums, oils, lotions and creams? Ok, ok, I'll admit it, I am skin care obsessed! The possibility of missing out on the perfect product is far worse than a 'minor' investment in the health of your skin.
So back to the topic at hand. What goes first and why the need for layering? Let's take a closer look...
Serums
Serums are liquids formulated to absorb faster into the skin. Typically they have a lower molecular weight and are jam-packed with active ingredients to assist with immediate corrective treatment. Investing in a good serum is a must!
Oils
Oils are heavier than serums but more dense. Naturally they are comprised of a blend of lipids. Oils can dissolve oil, so oily skin types please do not skip this option as they can be vital in maintaining the health of your skin. Oils can also provide comfort to a dry skin by providing much needed nourishment!
Gels
Gels tend to be comprised of water based ingredients. They have a gel-like texture and creates a smoothing, soothing film on the skin. Gels can contain many active ingredients for targeted results. They are not as readily absorbed as serums and keep actives on the skin while hleping to prevent moisture loss.
Fluids
Fluids are lighter than lotions but they are heavier than gels. They contain a water and an oil component which makes them ideal for oily to combination skin types. Men tend prefer the lighter feel of fluids and lotions versus creams.
Lotions
Lotions are heavier than fluids but not a dense as a cream. The ration of oil to water is increased resulting a lotion feel on the skin, adding moisture and lipids for balanced skin.
Creams
Creams are rich, nourishing products designed to form a protective film on the skin. Cream protect your skin from moisture loss by forming a barrier. Active ingredients may be dispersed in a creams and released via liposome technology into the skin. Drier and mature skin types love the comforting feeling of a cream.
When layering skin care the most liquid consistency will always be applied at the bottom to ensue the valuable actives are available immediate delivery and powerful results. Heavier products are applied towards the end to help sustain the skin through actives that are time released, forming a protective barrier on the skin.
Skin care is an investment and should be applied in the correct order for maximum results. Zoning is just as important as layer. Each zone of the skin can have a different condition that needs to be addressed. For zoning related questions feel free to contact us or consult your local skin care professional.
