Ageing is natural and unavoidable process of life. Luckily there are ways of how we can delay the ageing process and maintain a youthful appearance. Various external and internal factors result in ageing but we are going to focusing on the factors that we can control; the external factors.
On a daily basis your skin is exposed to fluctuating temperature changes. Exposure to extreme heat or extreme cold may result in hyperthermia or hypothermia of the skin. Changes in humidity and particularly dry atmospheric conditions can result in dehydration.
Sunlight is a major culprit when it comes to ageing. Exposure to sunlight catalyses a chemical reaction in the melanocytes causing changes in skin pigmentation and cause ageing, dehydration and discolouration.
Harmful chemicals inhaled or ingested can have toxic effects on the skin when metabolized by the body. Highly processed foods or a poor diet rob the body and the skin of essential nutrients, minerals and vitamins.
Chemicals in the form of subpar cosmetic formulations when applied to the skin may impair the protective acid mantle of the skin and destroy its natural pH. Soaps, detergents and soap-based emulsions remove natural skin oils and lipids contributing to wrinkle formation.
Smoking and alcohol is probably the most well know causes of ageing. Smoking produces mass amounts of free radicals which are one of the major causes of abnormal proteins in the body. Free radicals bind to proteins and lipids and can cause tissue damage. With the excessive intake of alcohol liver functions are impaired affecting the metabolism of the entire body. The skin will appear dry, dull and yellow.
Stress releases various hormones in the body but when looking at external factors we are looking at muscles used in facial expression. Excessive frowning results in frown lines. A lack of sleep also results in definitive signs such as bags under the eyes.
Ageing is inevitable but by following the correct home care regime and by consulting your skin expert the process can be slowed down and, in some cases, even reversed.
