Cleansing is important!

Why you might ask? Let's take a look at the skin as an organ. Yes, your skin is an organ. It is actually your largest organ. The skin performs several functions on a daily basis ranging from protection, regulation to sensation.

Your skin excretes natural oils which together with perspiration and dead skin cells form a protective barrier. This barrier protects you from environmental factors such as pollution, micro-organisms and moisture loss. When your natural skin barrier, or acid mantle, is compromised it can lead to dehydration, acne or even premature aging.

By cleansing our skin, we remove dirt, pollution, excess oils and dead skin cells. Cleansing prepares you for all other steps in your skin care routine. By cleansing you are creating a blank canvas allow the products to follow to perform optimally!

How does your cleansing method impact your skin? Let's have a look at various methods of cleansing.

Water

A splash of water on the skin will remove surface debris. This is a very gentle form of cleansing which when followed by towel drying will remove impurities superficially. Due to the lack of a cleansing agent surface oils and debris e.g. make up will not be dissolved and may leave a barrier on your skin which will affect the absorption of products. The debris left behind can settle in creases and contribute to clogged pores and premature aging.

The Face Cloth

A warm, dampened face cloth cleanses the skin superficially by removing debris and some oil mechanically. Take care when selecting a face cloth as a preferred cleansing method of as it may promote the growth of micro-organisms that multiply in warm, damp and dark conditions.

When selecting a face cloth opt for those made with specialized micro-fibres which are designed to not promote the growth of bacteria. For best results use a cleanser in conjunction with your face cloth to ensure skin is effectively cleansed.

The Facial Wipe

A facial cleansing wipe may not be as comforting as a warm face cloth but it is definitely more convenient! Facial wipes are presoaked clothes designed to remove skin impurities. There are a variety of wipes on the market designed for each and every imaginable skin type & condition. Take care not to choose a facial wipe that is too abrasive. Some facial wipes may contain fragrance and harsh cleansing agents. Take time to research brands to find the one that works best for you.

Although facial wipes are mostly designed as three-in-ones (make up remover, cleanser & toner) it is advisable to rinse the skin with water which may wash away any potential irritants. Facial wipes are designed for one time use only; do not reuse a facial wipe as micro-organisms may flourish which may lead to other skin concerns.

Cleansers

Cleansing products should be selected based on your skin type. Cleansers range from fluids, gels, lotions to creams; all created with a pH that reinforces your acid mantle. Cleansers may be applied to the skin using the hands, cotton rounds, facial sponges, cleansing cloths, or in conjunction with a cleansing device. Dispense a small amount of cleanser, emulsify with water and gently massage into the skin to help dissolve oils, remove impurities and free dead skin cells. Rinse cleansers thoroughly as some surfactants may cause irritation.

Cleansing Device

These popular mechanical devices are equipped with rotating, oscillating or vibrating brush heads and/ or bristles. Take care when selecting a cleansing device. Refrain from purchasing devices which rotate in one direction continuously as they may pull on the skin resulting in unnecessary damage and/ or premature aging. Gentle oscillating movements (back and forth rocking motions) are preferred to effectively cleanse the skin.

An important point for consideration is the cleansing of your cleansing device. Brush heads should be cleaned after every use and stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area to prevent the growth of micro-organisms. Brush heads need to be replaced according to manufacturer guidelines.

Problematic skin should consult with a professional prior to the purchase of a cleansing device as rotary brushes may result in certain conditions worsening (e.g. bristles may result in broken pustules resulting in bacteria spreading from follicle to follicle).

There are cleansing devices available that do not use rotating brushes but instead use pulsating pads with tiny silicone fingers that gently remove impurities. These are easy to clean and do not require the additional expense of a brush head replacement every few weeks.

Cleansing should be performed twice per day; once in the morning and once in the evening. Cleansing may also be performed prior to and post activities such as exercising. Cleansing is an important step in maintain the overall health of your skin.

Happy Cleansing!
